5 Reasons you should sell SVGs if you have a Cricut business

I’ve created a new course on Skillshare, how to make and sell SVG designs.

So in case you’re hesitating on taking it, I thought I would give you 5 good reasons to start selling SVGs and other digital designs if you already run a Vinyl or a Cricut business.

I sell SVG files through Vinyl Decal school but before I started that, I have also been building a digital shop for wedding designs to complement my vinyl business, and it was started with the same designs I use for my decals.

It’s not a full-time income but it brings in a few extra £100 a month with very little work on my part.

So this might not be for you if you don’t already create your own designs, but if you do, then it may be something to think about and this is why…

1. Extra money ‘passively’

I don’t really believe you can have fully ‘passive’ income. It does require work to add designs and you do get the occasional customer query that you have to deal with, so that term is a bit misleading. But as I said I do this and it takes up very little of my time - when you sell digital designs, you add them once and they can be bought multiple times with no extra work on your behalf, so you can essentially make money while you sleep!

2. Target people who would never be your customers anyway

So you might think, well why would I sell my designs for a cheaper price and lose out on physical sales of my products where I will make more money?

But people who own their own cutting machines, and there are more and more of them now, will never be your target audience for your physical items anyway, so you would never make a sale from them.

If you’re worried about those people taking your designs and becoming your competitors, however, that is a valid concern, but you can sell your designs with a personal license only if you want, or perhaps just pick and choose which designs you sell. Maybe don't sell your most popular ones, or just amend them in some way so that they're not exactly the same.

3. You know what a good design looks like

You know what works as a design file and what doesn't, so if you've been using your cutting machine for a while now you should know which designs work really well as cutting files and what don't. You should probably have figured out what people are looking for as well customer wise so it puts you in a really good position to create designs for others.

Maybe you can even spot a gap in the market where you would like to be able to buy something ready-made but it doesn’t exist… chances are if you want it, then lots of other people will too so you could go ahead and make and sell it yourself!

4. Perfect for when you are on a break

If you are on holiday, or are taking a break from making things but someone needs one of your designs as soon as possible - you can direct them to your online store and they can either print it or send to another crafter for them to make and you don’t have to worry about losing out on a sale. This is also great if someone needs something extra last minute and you don’t have time to get it to them in the post - they can use one of your digital designs to print instead. This has happened a few times for me with my wedding shop!

5. Another outlet for your creativity

If you have a crafty business then you are probably very creative! If you have a ton of ideas, maybe even too many to put on your own shop, then this is the perfect place to try out new things. And you can make designs that are suitable for so many different items as well, so it’s a great outlet for your creativity.

It’s not for everyone, and it might be too much extra work on top of everything else you already do, but I have just found it to be a great source of extra income for me, so I wanted to share it with everyone else as I love helping people diversify their businesses.

If you think you just want to dive right in, then I also have a 40 free listings link to Etsy and a referral link for opening a shop in Design Bundles too if you want to check those out.
